Heartburn? Here's why you shouldn't have to live with it any longer.

Heartburn is one of the most common complaints among patients in London — and particularly among the Italian community living here. It often starts as a passing discomfort after a heavy meal or a stressful day.
But when it becomes a frequent sensation, when it wakes you at night or dictates what you can eat, it's no longer a minor issue: it's a signal from your body that deserves attention.

In most cases the cause is gastro-oesophageal reflux — the upward movement of stomach acid into the oesophagus.
Sometimes it's linked to lifestyle, but very often there is an underlying anatomical problem that can be corrected effectively.

The signs of reflux you shouldn't underestimate

Many patients tell me they have "tolerated" their symptoms for years, almost getting used to them. Yet the signs are clear:

  • Burning behind the breastbone, especially after meals
  • Persistent dry cough
  • Hoarse voice in the morning
  • Difficult digestion, sensation of food getting stuck
  • Acid reflux when lying down
  • Bitter taste in the mouth or night-time regurgitation
  • Feeling of a lump in the throat or constant need to clear it

If one or more of these symptoms occur several times a week, it is very likely there is a mechanical cause: a weakened oesophageal valve, a hiatal hernia, increased oesophageal sensitivity, or established oesophagitis.

Ignoring them does not help: over time reflux can worsen, become harder to control and, in more advanced cases, lead to inflammation or cellular changes that need monitoring.

The good news: today we can really treat it

Modern medicine offers several solutions, and not all involve the chronic use of medication.

Depending on the situation, the pathway may include:

  • Targeted medical therapy to reduce acidity and protect the oesophagus
  • Lifestyle adjustments, effective in milder cases
  • Accurate evaluation of any hiatal hernia
  • Minimally invasive procedures, such as laparoscopic surgery, which restore the natural barrier against reflux

The goal is not simply to "switch off the symptom", but to resolve the cause, restoring normal digestion and the quality of life patients often haven't experienced in years.

The advantage of bilingual specialist care in London

Many patients tell me communication makes the real difference. Describing your symptoms, understanding the options and making important decisions is much easier when you can do it in your own language.

Having worked in London for many years, I combine a modern, evidence-based surgical approach with clear, direct and reassuring communication — in both English and Italian. No unnecessary jargon, no confusion: you really understand what's going on and what you can do about it.

This is why an increasing number of patients — both self-pay and insured — come to me for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up.

When it's time for a specialist evaluation

I always recommend a consultation when:

  • Symptoms require frequent use of antacids
  • Heartburn wakes you at night or restricts your diet
  • Reflux is accompanied by cough or hoarseness
  • You already have a diagnosis of hiatal hernia
  • Reflux is affecting your social life, work or sleep
  • You have difficulty swallowing or feel food getting stuck

A complete evaluation — consultation, endoscopy, ultrasound, targeted functional tests — allows us to understand exactly what the problem is and set up the right therapy.

Many patients tell me: "I wish I had acted sooner."
And almost always, after the appropriate pathway, they return to a completely normal life.
